Primary School
Wakkerstroom Primary School is a well loved place of learning for 200 children from very poor families who labour on wine farms in the area.
Their parent’s wages are often
paid with wine, which results in infants born with fetal
alcohol syndrome, affecting brain development, vision, etc.
The children witness a lot of alcohol related abuse,
physically, sexually and domestically. However, the
children are thriving at school, where they learn HIV/AIDS
education, personal hygiene, respect and self worth. They
receive milk and bread each day, are growing vegetable
gardens, participate in sports, sing in a choir and have
recently received 60 computers on which to learn IT skills.
A mini bus has been donated for children who walk up to 16
km one way to get to school, and to arrange experiences
such as seeing a bank, a library, a post office, a public
swimming pool and a grocery store for the first time!
Leur Présence would love to see this school used as an
accessible model for schools across the country.
With your help, we fund a special program and an exciting
event for this school each year.
The Christmas Lunch is an incredibly fun day full of face
painting, jumping castles, games, a clown performance, a
dance and drama team, music, an inspirational message and a
fabulous feast for 300 underprivileged children! A (very
tanned) Santa Claus pops in to give hugs and toys for all!
Eyes for Africa is a program
born of a Canadian team who visited in 2005, which funds
eye tests for the school children, the results of which are
used by an eye doctor and his family in Canada to provide
them with glasses! It is amazing to see how vision boosts
their self confidence and their grades!
